Gafsa, Tunisia
Gafsa (Arabic: قفصة qafṣah/gafṣah Gafsˤa) is the capital of Gafsa Governorate of Tunisia. With a population about 120,000 for the city, over 160,000 for the agglomeration and over 355,000 for the governorate, Gafsa is the ninth-largest Tunisian city and is 335 km from the country’s capital, Tunis.
Nestled in southwestern Tunisia, Gafsa is a city with a remarkable history that stretches back over 7,000 years. It is one of the oldest continually inhabited regions in North Africa, known for its role as a cradle of the Capsian culture, which flourished during the Neolithic period. Evidence of this ancient past can still be seen in the region’s archaeological sites and artifacts.
During Roman times, Gafsa, then known as Capsa, was a key outpost of the empire, contributing to its strategic and economic significance. The ruins of ancient Roman baths and fortifications still stand as a testament to this era. Later, Gafsa played a prominent role in Islamic history, becoming a vibrant cultural and trade center in the medieval period.
Today, Gafsa is celebrated for its unique charm, combining historical depth with a modern, dynamic spirit. The city is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including palm groves and desert vistas and serves as a gateway to the Tunisian Sahara. Gafsa is also renowned for its phosphate mines, which contribute significantly to Tunisia’s economy.
